I'm trying to get the correct protective equipment for a chainsaw. I see helmets that look like this
being sold for chainsaw use, but it's not clear if they are meant to protect your face from the running saw in the event of kickback, or if they are just to stop woodchucks from getting in your face and protection from falling branches.
Are these meant to stop the saw from injuring your face/head in the same way that chaps protect the legs?
I believe you are using the tool wrong. With a sawsall I have seen many people try and hold the saw in place, I am a big guy 6'5" and close to 300lbs and I could do this for a few minutes but prefer to use the guard to stop the tool from pulling my arms around. Push the guard up to the work and don't try to feed two fast or it will push back. When properly cutting it takes very little effort to hold the tool in place and let it do the cutting. If you do not use the guard to keep the tool from moving the sawsall is putting your arms through what it would take to cut using a hack saw. Keep the saw tight to the work and let it do the work.
Yes, it turned out to be a faulty coil. The replacement coil came with its own flywheel, so perhaps there was a design flaw in the original.
It took some work to insert the new coil. Setting the gap between the flywheel and coil (0.3mm) was a little fussy. Had some automotive feeler gauges lying around that helped with that. And getting the little spark plug cap/insulator properly on the coil was a bit of a pain.
After buttoning it up, it started on the first pull. So I'm fairly certain it was the coil.

The helmet is designed to protect you from falling objects. It is also the mounting point for the face shield and ear protection. The helmet will also provide limited protection from the saw in the event the saw were to kick-back or the operator lost control and the chain were to impact the operators' head. It will not provide protection from a running saw being held against the helmet. This differs from safety chaps which are designed to actually stop a saw in the event of contact with the chaps.
