I installed fiberglass new construction windows 15 years ago on the front of the house. I used finger-jointed casing around the windows that measure about 1-1/2" square to fill the cavity around the window. The tops and sides are pristine, but the bottom pieces are crumbling! The eaves protect all of the upper wall and casing, but the lower wall takes a tremendous beating from rain and sun. Bottom line, I'm looking for a material that will hold up better. Thinking vinyl, but not seeing those dimensions without building it up. Starting to think about some sort of vinyl or composite wood decking that I could rip. Any ideas? thx!

The basic procedure for removing a door is: remove casing, remove screws from jamb/brick mold, and push the door out of the hole, brick mold still attached. Unfortunately your situation calls for some more devious tactics. Because the outer molding appears to be part of the transom casing (assuming you're leaving that part alone) you're probably better off not disturbing it. So you have to remove the interior trim, remove any screws that connect the jamb to the substructure, then very carefully prize the jamb away from the outer molding with a bar such as this:
to keep from marring the backside of your brick mold.
Once the door is out, the problem then becomes finding a new door/jamb that fits the opening not just properly but perfectly in order to get the reveals right, which may be a challenge considering how old and...unique your existing door is. If you over come that hurdle, just caulk the backside of the brick mold with sealant (sealant not caulk) and follow the manufacturers instructions for sealing the threshold and all should be well. Your options are:
- Use a second layer of 1/2" drywall to bring the wall flush to the window;
- Trim the window casing down by 1/2"; or
- Use inch thick trim on the window casing.
Personally I recommend #2 and would use what's called a Japanese saw:
or a multi-tool with a wood blade
to trim the casing down to be flush with the wall.

Your best choice would be something made from PVC sold in the trim section of any usual big box home improvement store. Or you could use a heavily treated wood like "Armour" wood that has a higher resistance to rot which is also sold in most stores. Also make sure to use proper flashing behind the trim.☺
