How universal are drills and bit sets? Can I mix and match bit brands with drill brands? For example, would a Black and Decker bit set work with a Kobalt drill? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm quite new to all of this. Thanks!

Wrap a bit of tape around the bit, to mark the desired depth. Then carefully drill your holes, stopping when you've reached the tape.
I've also seen this done with a bit of wire.
WARNING: Wrapping the wire in the wrong direction, can lead to property damage, injury, and death.

I tried one of these and it was total crap, so I wouldn't recommend it. Your mileage may vary though, so give it a try if you like.
The chuck will most likely not be press fitted onto the shaft, meaning that hammering will not work to get the gap away.
the chuck actually screws onto the drill shaft (reverse thread - counter-clockwise to tighten) So what you need to do is the following:
- Open the chuck fully, and look into the chuck opening - can you see a screw or Allen key? ... if so, remove the screw/bolt.
- get one of your biggest Allen/hex keys and insert into the chuck (short side first) and tighten the chuck jaws around the key.
- Turn the key clockwise until the chuck jaws are back to the original position.
- Replace the screw/bolt.
if you cannot turn, you may want to place the drill on a hard surface and knock the key with a hammer a few times to see if it turns.

They're universal. That'll work just fine. Drills have chucks with three jaws that clamp down on whatever you stick in them, so they can use round-shank bits and hex bits too.
