Is there any way these columns with the top and bottom brackets can be supporting columns. If I can't tell by the brackets, I will need to break into their drywall at places to see if it or another beam is supporting. I want to remove them.[Images![][1]](https://i.stack.imgur.com/Ei8bU.png)

I think they're there for stabilizing the brown beams/joists. Typically, a loft is unused space with no floor. Between the joists, there is insulation supported by drywall or other material depending on the age of the house (as in pic 2 and 3).
Typically one would put in blocking between joists to stop horizontal flexing and torsion.
Since an attic is usually unused space, I think someone took a short cut and just screwed the 2x4s to the tops of the joist. (Significant labour savings!). Your flooring probably makes it unnecessary from a flexing point of view, but you still have a torsion problem (especially since you're now loading the joists).
When you go to make improvements, block the joists properly, but I wouldn't worry in the short term.

Edit: Sorry if I'm not on the same wavelengths as anyone else. I already know about insurance and inspectors, and that was not at all what I was asking about. I just wanted to know what length of wood would span a certain distance given various criteria. I would have expected an answer to that question, instead of all the "your a dumb homeowner who's going to get in trouble" type replies. I question the idea that there will be 50psf of weight from snow given the fact that it is an almost non-solid top, and saw no real attempt to answer my question, so I had to come up with this. It took me awhile to find, and I hope it helps others.

Yes, those posts are probably supporting the beam (above). You’ll need to determine the load on the beam, size of existing beam, span from post(s) to wall, and location of footings.
The post without the metal base connector may just be decorative...to match the other post. However, either hire an architect or structural engineer OR submit more info regarding beam sizes, spans, footing locations, etc. for additional help.
