I want to cover a small area to be usable in the winter / rain.
I am thinking of using some transparent or semi/transparent material to allow light to pass and to be discreet.
I found Plexiglas, but I still think it's a bit expensive per square/mt for the work I want to do. I am not even really sure that will work the way I want to. Is there a cheaper alternative?

It is almost impossible to know their original intended usage. Perhaps they were "windows" in a set for some old play, then removed and saved after the set was torn down.
My guess is the person scavenged then from some application like that, then kept them hidden away in case they ever found a new use. That you found them still hidden says they never did find a use, and that you won't either. However, I'll bet that you can sell them on Craigslist or ebay. Or bring them to your local auction house, where all sorts of things like this get sold.
i've actually done this myself and love the way it looks. can't tell you how many compliments i receive on it. but i think the compliments are because i took it a step further and ran some battery powered lights to them, so they double as night lights. i just glued them in place with an epoxy and they've been holding for 9 years and counting. i've included a photo of the ball and also tried to cover it up with a blanket to take one in the dark with the light on. the house is over 100 years old, so i don't mind it not being perfect. if anything, the glue looks like a bit of dust in there. i just noticed that the first photo also shows the one at the bottom of the stairs...

There are all sorts of translucent roofing products, mostly corrugated. Some are cheap, others ridiculously expensive. Any large building supply company should have the stuff.
