I lived in a rental apartment. Recently my roommate decide to sublease his room, so I'd like to replace my door knob with a lockable one, but I'm unable to remove this core part ( I don't know what it is called).
Can't quite find a place to screw off this thing.
Question :
I suspect it is installed by hammering?
Can this thing be uninstalled in a non-destructing way?
If the answer to 2 is yes, how can this be done ?

According to the International Building Code, door knobs should be between 34" - 48" above the finished floor.

Section 1008 Doors, Gates and Turnstiles
1008.1.9.2 Hardware height.
Door handles, pulls, latches, locks and other operating devices shall be installed 34 inches (864 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1219 mm) maximum above the finished floor. Locks used only for security purposes and not used for normal operation are permitted at any height.
You could consider attaching a thick acrylic or other plastic panel that covers the interior of the glass and is firmly screwed to the door. The edges can then be covered with molding.
Such plastics are shatter resistant. While they can be broken, they will not yield to the tools of most casual home intruders (unless they carry sledge hammers or blow torches).
No entry is totally burglarproof, but this would substantially reduce the risk (although many would consider it overkill).
An alternative is the use of double cylinder deadbolt. This replaces the interior deadbolt thumb turn with a keyed cylinder.
While this increases security, it poses a significant risk in case of emergency such as fire. If the key is removed from the interior cylinder, the occupants cannot get out of the house through that exit quickly. Some people using double cylinders leave the key in the cylinder when at home and remove it when they are away. Some also hang a key near the lock, but out of reach of the door window.

As @ Daniel Griscom suggested, I'm able to pull the latchbolt out from the side.
After prying off the bezel a little bit by a flathead screwdriver, I integrated the door knobs back and pull it side way, and successfully uninstalled the bezel and the latchbolt together.
