As long as you keep your current consumption under the rating for the circuit, that's completely OK. Getting the old boxes out will be tricky, but can be done without too much damage to the surrounding drywall; if the old box is mounted to a stud, it may be easier for you to cut the nails than trying to pull them out. You'll probably have to use a remodeling box anyway, so the old nails won't get in the way.
Depending on your local codes, you may or may not be allowed to do the work yourself -- check with your city (or whatever authority applies) to be sure.
I like power strips similar to this for work areas. They are nice because they have an on/off switch, which if mounted in an easy to reach location could save life and limb.
Using a power strip like this should not be a problem, as long as you don't run too many tools at once. And it should conform to most codes, as it would be classified as an extension cord (I think).

If it is 15A or 20A, You can have as many 220V outlets as you want, single or double receptacle. Except you cannot have them in certain rooms of a home.
You can use 15A receptacles on a 20A circuit, as long as there is more than one receptacle in the circuit.
So just change this
