I have a light switch that makes a loud high-pitched squeak when turned on or off. I'd like to apply some sort of lubricant to it so that it's not so loud, but I'm not certain as to what risks are involved given that it's electrical wiring.
Is there a safe lubricant that can be used on a light switch, or am I better off to just replace the switch altogether?
The timer you installed is designed for incandescent lights only. They make a timer suitable for induction loads (fan motor) You need to switch it out for the correct timer switch. I made the same mistake myself and getting the correct switch solved the slow fan problem.
The white "screws", are knockout plugs. A knockout is simply a hole where conduit, cable, wire, or a device can attach/enter the box. A knockout plug, is used to fill unused knockouts.
Here is a similar box cover with the knockouts unplugged.
This allows you to attach devices, like lamp holders and motion sensors.
Any extra holes would be filled with a plug.
You should be able to hire an Electrician to install a switch as you mention, but it would depend on if you have the legal right to (own vs. rent, etc.)

It's a standard single-pole, single-throw switch?
Just replace it. They cost $1 or so, and it's not worth the hassle to figure out what's wrong with the current one.
