I am trying to detach a garden hose that is presently hooked to a dehumidifier. It spins freely but will not unscrew itself. Any idea what to do? Here is a picture:

It's called "a very short hose". :) You can make your own with parts commonly available at hardware and big-box stores.
Alternatively, install a simple valve, an elbow, or a backflow preventer:
Be aware that extending a plastic connection with a rigid part adds torque stress to that connection. Use caution to not lever on it.
Make sure the gasket/oring is still in the hose fitting if not, get another one at your local hardware store. You could even try some Teflon tape.

The knurled portion of the fitting is the part that unscrews. The longer brass-colored portion should be held stationary, perhaps with pliers while loosening, perhaps with another set of pliers, the knurled portion. This should allow you to release the hose.
