My washer fills, then agitates, then drains out, but gets stuck draining. I can move the knob to get the machine to move to the next step in the cycle, but when it needs to drain again after the rinse, it won't stop draining. Again, I can move the knob to get it to spin out. The only issue I can detect is that the machine doesn't seem to know it's done draining. Thoughts?

I'm not completely sure how the drive elements connect up on this. I know there is no belt. Gear box seems very unlikely. You should examine how the agitator attaches to the drive shaft below the top cap of the agitator. Sounds like it's slipping, and if that's the case, it may not be able to spin either. If it works differently than I think, it could be the clutch slipping. To get to the clutch is major surgery. You'd have to remove the agitator and would discover any slipping parts here on your way to the clutch any way.
It turned out to be a bad timer. Since it drained, and spun and rinsed, I knew it was not the pump or filter or motor. I found "the last one" online, but it was a super easy fix that saved my hundreds of dollars (thousands if my girlfriend had her way). Just locate your model number (on the inside of the lid, or under it on the body).
Just pop the top control panel off by removing three screws. Then unscrew the circuit board. The handles just pull off with evenly applied pressure.
