I have rat traps in my attic and I catch a rat every few months.
Answers on rat/mice problems – such this one How can I get rid of a mouse in my house? – always include the suggestion to track down how they are getting in. Any suggestions for how to go about doing that? Finding a tiny hole in a large attic seems like a daunting problem to me.

One solution I've seen people use is to get a fog machine, like are used for parties and start it up running in the area, then move around the inside and outside of the house looking for leaks. It won't work so well for low lying areas, but for an attic it might present a good option.
