I have three prehung doors with built-in aluminum door sills. They are 15-20 years old and starting to look kinda crappy. I've tried cleaning them with household cleaners but it didn't improve the appearance much. One is between my LR and a newly renovated 3-season porch so the bad appearance really contrasts with and detracts from the new floor. Any thoughts on making them look better? I suspect paint would not wear well.

At the end of the spiral balance is a small hole... you will need a tool for this... (look on line and buy one ) it has a small hook on it... move your spiral up by hand until it stops... take the tool insert tip into hole and turn the spiral about 10 times... ( clockwise ) ... then using that same tool move the spiral up in to the area that will hold it...( this might not be easy ) but it will kind of be on a ledge that will hold the two small pins... the tension will hold it up... do both sides so the number of times is 10 and giving the same tension on both sides.... slowly raise the window... Depends on the size of the screw and how much material you have to work with. If this is a clamp bolt, cheap tripods use screws going directly into the casting. Quality units either use a captured nut, Nyloc nut and eccentric toggle or a tee-head bolt with threaded knob.
If this is a plate with a fair amount of metal surrounding the hole and it's deep enough, I would get a Heli-Coil kit. With this kit, you drill the hole oversize with the supplied drill, use the supplied tap and then the tool to install the helical insert.
Another thread repair is Keensert which, if you have yet more metal because it's a larger device, a locking insert that doesn't require delicate use of Red Loctite to keep it in place.
All the above probably are not recommended in the case that the threaded hole is in a casting that doesn't have spare metal, so the previous recommendations of drilling oversize and tapping for a larger bolt might be the best. Which might not be a solution if the threads are common photography standard attachments between devices.

If you're referring to tarnish, try a metal cleaner marketed for aluminum. Most thresholds are raw (not anodized or clearcoated), and you can simply polish away the oxidation with the right product.
You could also brush the surface with a drill or rotary tool and a wire brush to give it a textured appearance and make it less slippery.
