I am trying to replace my kitchen faucet and have encountered a nut that I don’t know how to get at. As you can see the nut is bounded by counter (green) on one side and sink (red) on the other. I’ve tried various wrenches but can’t seem to get them in there. What’s the right way to get this thing off?
The pipe that it’s on is about 2.5 inches long.
As Steven says, hit it with some penetrating oil first (WD-40 should work for this). Give it some gentle whacks against a piece of scrap wood in all directions to help break any bonds. Then clamp on to the bottom square part and try to torque the nut on top with a socket. If you still can't get it, you may find it easier to replace the entire thing.
You might find a monobloc tap wrench that fits. They are designed for reaching up behind a basin.
Or a conventional box-wrench set, though I'd guess they are usually not long enough. You can use a normal 1/2" drive socket set to extend one.
If you are replacing the tap, you could use a rotary tool (e.g. Dremel) or similar to cut off the bottom part of the threaded tube to gain access to the nut at the top without interference from the connector at the bottom.

Clearly, water has been leaking through. You might just have limescale deposits that can be cleaned off with a limescale remover and perhaps with a wire brush (perhaps using a rotary tool again)

What you want is a basin wrench:
The left end pivots so you can reach up under the sink and access the nut.
That said, you have some serious corrosion going on there. You might have to go with destructive methods, perhaps involving grinding off the top of the faucet.
