Is it okay to throw paper towels & rags with mineral spirits in the trash bin

I was researching whether I should be concerned with paper towels used in changing oil on my cars and came upon this thread. They seem quite positive that there is no possibility of spontaneous combustion occurring when disposing of automotive petroleum products.

Ordinary petroleum products, such as motor oil, grease, diesel fuel and gasoline, do not have a double bond in their chemical make-up. For that reason, the oxidation reaction that occurs with animal and vegetable oils and the oxygen in the air does not occur. Therefore, those materials do not undergo spontaneous combustion! This fact may come as a surprise to some people because there have been numerous fires blamed on soiled rags with those products on them. The fact is that saturated flammable liquids do not spontaneously ignite and cannot start to burn without some other ignition source.“

I really think a palm sander is the wrong tool for this job. Palm sanders are great for finishing with finer grits but lack the power to remove layers of paint quickly. The siding job you are starting would go a lot faster with a 5 or 6 inch dual action (DA) sander with prepunched velcro backed sandpaper disks. There are several nice ones for under $100 and buying disks in contractor packs is a good value. I have two Ridgid 5 inch DA sanders and have used and abused them for years. I think HD sells them for about $70.
