My new Samsung dishwasher emits a sewage odor (started with the 1st use) through the dishwasher air vent, but only while it's running. I think its pulling air through the drain hose while its running. It actually smells up all the surrounding cabinets too. The installer felt that running the drain hose up and over the cabinet wall to connect with garbage disposal would create a sufficient air trap. Shouldn't the drain hose have an actual 'loop' before connecting to the garbage disposal? I did not notice this odor with the old dishwasher. Thanks for any advice.

I have had my Bosch dishwasher for about a year using the same setup you contemplate, so I'm familiar with the exact drain connector you have on the dishwasher hose. On mine, there was something of a taper between the 1/2 and 3/4 section and being rather flexible rubber, and I had no difficulty stretching the 1/2 section of the fitting to fit on the 5/8 gap fitting. I then tightened down the hose clamp with a hex bit on my cordless driver. The clamp was tight enough to somewhat compress a groove into the rubber, and I tugged on the thing as hard as I could. It isn't coming off IMHO. I'm at work, but can send a picture later if you need.
I understand you are worried somewhat about the quality of the connection. You could get a 1/2 to 5/8 adapter like this:
But that would entail 3 hose clamps and a section of 5/8 ID hose to connect between the adapter and air gap. That seems like more points of failure. At any rate, I think you already have what you need to get this working.
You have two options which are equally acceptable.
Option one is a dual inlet air gap. It provides two inlets - one for dishwasher, and another for a water purification system. Installation is straight forward - you remove the existing air gap and put the new one in its place. You can find such a device here.
Your other option is to purchase a faucet for your water filter that includes a built-in air gap, such as this. Note that if you go this route, you will have two drain lines that both need to connect to the garbage disposal. You can accomplish this by using a wye fitting to join the two drain lines into one line, which you would then connect to the disposal. A barbed wye fitting should be available at your local home improvement store for a minimal cost. Don't forget the hose clamps.

You need a loop (it should go above where the dishwasher enters the disposal) or an airgap to prevent the backflow of drainage water into the dishwasher. The smell could be coming from the inside of your garbage disposal.
The line should definitely be arranged like this photo, where a portion of the line curves above where it enters your disposal.
