I found a leak in my garbage disposal, and I think I know the source (possibly a crack in the drainpipe).
However, now I'm stuck on how to actually take off the drain pipe.
The disposal pipe (3 in the picture) seems to be getting stuck right after the threading in piece #2.
Is there a correct way to take the pipe off?
Have a look at the trap under your sink. Assuming it's PVC with large plastic nuts, all you should need is ChannelLock pliers:
Unscrew the trap from the wall and disposal, and clean the trap itself, or snake the drain going into the wall, depending on where your clog is. Be sure to have a bucket and towels handy since there will be water backed up before the clog and in the trap.
If you can't find the clog either in the trap or with the snake, and you know it's further down the drain (try running some water through the disposal and into the bucket with the trap out), then I have family that swear by these drain bladders that attach to a garden hose, get inserted into the drain (past the vent) and they swell up to seal your end of the pipe while sending water down until the clog is forced out:
Each one of these will cost around $20 give or take, well less than a visit from a plumber.
Reviewing the design of a garbage disposal here it seems very difficult for anything like a chunk of rubber to actually get jammed in the grind ring.
If you were to put something in there like a chunk of rubber (or bone), it seems likely it will bounce around and not get ground up at all. Small bits or rubber might get broken off in the ring but by the design they should be washed down the drain. I have experience with the piece of bone thing and it does, in fact, just bounce around irritatingly refusing to be ground up.
It would seem the worst things for disposals are slimy sticky things that are not water soluble. These materials could get into the grinder ring and clog it up similar to a file being clogged with paint.
So, if your piece of rubber was batted into the disposal by your spiteful cat, it is likely still in there bouncing around. Your choices are: have a child or slender-wristed lady fish it out; or remove the disposal, dump it out and possibly disassemble it to clean it out.
BTW you may want to keep the cat a little happier since you do have to sleep sometime. 😼

That should be a slip fit and simply pull out.
It's possible that some prior worker glued the joint between 1&2 with 3 inserted, and it got stuck that way. It's also possible that it's merely stuck with years of crud. In either case, it should pull out, twisting it while pulling may help to break whatever is sticking it loose, and if it just won't go you need a whole new set of parts 1, 2, & 3
