I recently wall mounted my TV and put a shelf underneath for my dvd player. Unfortunately the power cable for the dvd player is too short. I've searched and searched for dvd players that have either a long cable or a cable that can be removed so I can buy a longer one.
I know I could buy an extension lead but it would look really ugly?
I cable needs to be 2m long, do currently about a metre short.
Any suggestions ?

Chimney vents must not be compromised! All heat and gas related stacks must be left intact. No additional venting or other holes may be put in them. As the comments have noted, you run the serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as the risk of chimney and house fires.
Find another route well away from the chimney.
Definitely go with the ceiling mounting. However, I prefer simple, clean & neat.
(1) Is the setup I prefer. The top hook (4) is best, as it screws into the structure's framing, if you can find it. If not, then (5) can be screwed into the drywall or plaster to receive (4). (2) & (3) also use just the drywall or plaster & give you positioning flexibility. (6) can be an open or closed (carabiner) S-hook or even just a nut & bolt with washers, so just the top of the chain is removable.

Unless the existing cord is removable, you'll have to extend it with a second cord. Yes, the connection between the two will be ugly if it's hanging in the middle of the wall, but you could wrap up the whole first cable behind the player so that the joint between the two is also behind the player. You'll need a longer extension, but if it's important to you then it'll be worth it.
