I have a metal rod with these threaded female connectors on each side. I'm hoping to cut the rod down a bit to shorten it but still keep the female connector on the side i cut. Is there a way to remove and reinsert this? I'm not sure how it's attached – I got it off amazon as a camera arm.
Luiz, to me this looks like it is not sealing and the pipe Dope liquid really doesn’t do much better than PFTE tape. I have had better luck staying with plastic 100% or metal 100% until the final fitting used to connect the shutoff valve. The PFTE tape should be “chewed up” when you put on the fitting, if not the 2 different sizes are not sealing and may very well leak. I have seen this same thing when folks use electrical couplings for pipe (they are not tapered like normal pipe couplings) and they started leaking after the walls were closed.
If the mirror is not over 50 lbs or more you can use picture hooks that are rated for 75 lbs that go only into the drywall.
Drywall will hold it, it is not like the wall vibrates or anything like that to make them loose. Besides the nails are set at an angle so it keeps hanging, not able to slide out.

Cut the rod to the desired length. Then get a rotary tool like a Dremel with a cutoff disk. Cut the tubing that holds the insert lengthwise down to the surface of the insert. Make three or four cuts. Then pry the tubing apart with a slotted screwdriver, freeing up the insert. Slightly chamfer the inside edge of the shortened length of tubing and tap/pound the insert into the tubing.
