I broke the cord on my generator and I want to replace it with something stronger than typical rope. Does anyone have experience with another material?

IMHO all of these 'don't run in the rain' rules mean, "don't let it get wet"
So the easy answer is to build a small shed for it, or locate it under sufficient overhang.
I have a gas generator with the same proviso -- don't operate in rain. I took a barrel, split it in half verticaly, and the generator wears it like a hat.
You haven't given yourself a mechanical advantage here. If you attach a pulley to the bucket, then bring the line back up, you will only need to pull half as hard (but the operation will require more rope of course). Yes, reduce friction at the top with a pulley as well, if you can.

If you use stronger cord, you'll just break something harder to replace next time. The cord is a "mechanical fuse" - a "weak link" - if it's breaking, it's either quite old, or you are doing something wrong when starting the generator.
Replace it with the same stuff, don't yank it past the point where it turns the generator, and it should last for many years.
