The chain on a chainsaw I borrowed came off after I used it . I got in back on and it is tight but it will not go around the bar.It starts ok and the chain lock is not on.Why is this happening??

One of my dad's words of wisdom to me was "Don't mess around with chainsaws." While he meant be careful when using them, I'd say it applies here. While you could try to repair the chain, if it caused something to bind and caused kickback while sawing, the results could be disastrous.
And new chains are cheap compared to prosthetic limbs- $20-$30. So do yourself a favor, throw the old chain away, and buy a new one.
Most two cycle engines are sensitive to the newer gasoline blends that can contain up to 10% ethanol. Get a small bottle of fuel additive for small engines and add a small amount of that into your gas tank. It should run a lot better after that. I had a similar problem with my leaf blower last year and this did the trick.
Star Tron is a much better brand than Stabil by the way.
If you are still having trouble and you have already checked the spark plugs, sometimes the magneto can have a buildup of rust on the surface that prevents it from generating enough current to sustain repeated firing of the spark plug as the engine turns. Take apart the pull start mechanism on the chainsaw until the magneto is exposed, and take a fine grit sandpaper to it to rub off all the rust that has formed on it by sitting all these years. To clarify the magneto is the part that is magnetic, it should grab your screwdriver.

Chains do come off when they heat up if they are not tight. There are usually 2 bolts on the side of the bar. Break these loose then there will be a screw to tighten /loosen. Loosen the bar move the bar back until the chain will go on. Once the chain is on tighten the chain and rotate it by hand pulling down in the middle to check for tension. Once the guide no longer clears the bar but there is a little slack tighten the 2 bolts and you are good to go.
