I have this device on my outdoor water faucet. It is leaking water in all directions and by leaking, I mean pouring water everywhere.
What is the purpose of this device and how can I remove it so I can replace it if it is needed ? I don't have an in-house winter valve, so I'm guessing that it has some usage for winter.
I tried to remove it using a vise-grip but to no good.
Brass Hose Cap (~$1.50 @ Home Depot and Lowes).
You may also be able to find some with tethers (for those of us that constantly lose things like this) .
The next step secret to getting more of this faucet apart are the two slots cut across the cupped part. See the arrows in the following picture.
It looks to me as that the cupped part is threaded down inside the larger diameter part that sticks up from the hole in the sink. There is probably a special tool used to engage these slots to thread the part out. It may be possible to lay a piece of metal bar stock across these slots as a tool. If you do that make sure that it has nice square corners.

Looking at your bib at the house siding, its not secured. Use a second wrench on the faucet, torquing in the opposite direction to the wrench on the backflow adapter. This will prevent you from busting the water pipe and REALLY making a mess. Backflow article
