Wood – How to join pieces of wood tiles, 12“ by 12” pieces, to make a larger slab

I have a project to work on that requires me using larger pieces of planks than what I currently have. I have square planks all over the porch that would suffice if only I had a good way of fitting pieces together.How can I join these individual pieces 12" by 12" tiles to make longer or larger planks for my project please?

Use a biscuit joiner.

Then glue and clamp to dry.

But depends what you using them for.

There not going to be heaps strong if the timber spands over a distance.

You don't say what saw you used to cut the wood, but if you use a tenon saw you should get a cleaner cut in the first place that requires less sanding. This is because the saw has finer teeth for a smoother cut and a stiffening spine that means you get a straighter cut.

Clamping a second piece of wood to use as a guide is another alternative.

Alternatively you could use a plane to remove the excess wood - but make sure that you clamp a piece of scrap wood to the end of the plank to avoid it splitting:

I agree with your contractor that it is not necessary.

In fact it would be better if you don't, in my opinion.

If it is not directly exposed to moisture or UV from the sun I would prefer to leave it uncoated so if it does absorb some moisture it will dry out more quickly, prolonging it's life.
