I feel these phrases are not interchangeable. We usually use "lots of luck" when we wish somebody, for example, I wish you lots of luck in your job! Otherwise, it doesn't sound appropriate to use this phrase in other cases like the second sentence.
So the first sentence "I had a lot of luck yesterday" is preferable.
