Learn English – What do you call the circular thing inside a bathtub
word-request
What do you call the circular thing inside a bathtub? In the picture above, it's submerged in the water. What do you call that thing, right below the faucet?
Best Answer
That is the tub drain overflow plate, though it's actually above the drain, not the faucet. (The opening in this plate leads to a tube that prevents the tub from overflowing by allowing water to run out even if the drain in the bottom of the tub is stopped.)
The first is often called a mister- a device, such as a bottle, with a nozzle for spraying a mist of water, esp. on houseplants.
The second is often called a CD cakebox, defined by Google as...
1: A storage container for a round layer cake, with a surrounding cover that protects and preserves the cake.
2: A similarly shaped package for blank, recordable compact discs, with a central spindle on which discs are stacked.
As implied by that second definition, if OP specifically wants to refer to the "pole" in the middle, it's always called the spindle.
The two popular words for this would be "dive" (or "dove", past-tense) or wade
To "dive into the water" is close in meaning to saying "jumping into the water so as to entirely (or mostly) cover oneself in water". But to "wade into the water" generally means a slower and more gentle entry into the water, and to be incompletely submerged in the water. To wade in the water further implies walking rather than outright swimming.
So if you want to note going into the water and being completely submerged, you might say "dive under the water" instead of "dive into the water", as this makes it entirely clear that you mean complete submersion - but either is pretty clear.
