Edge computing, or computing done at the edge, is an IT (information technology) term. The 'edge' is the notional periphery or boundary of a computer network with data centres at the central point.

Edge computing is a distributed IT architecture in which client data is processed at the periphery of the network, as close to the originating source as possible.

Instead of transmitting raw data to a central data centre for processing and analysis, that work is instead performed where the data is actually generated, e.g. on board a vehicle such as a bus train, or plane, in a retail store, a factory floor, a public utility or across a smart city. Only the result of that computing work at the edge, such as real-time business information, vehicle maintenance predictions, etc, is sent back to the main data centre for review by humans. Advantages include reduced network/Internet congestion, faster response for users, less reliance on single data processing centres.
