Learn English – English folk saying or proverb involving the number four (of people)

I think this saying puts emphasis on unfairness and inequality.

So "it's an unfair world" would be an equivalent.

Also, Oxford dictionary has this translation.

Additionaly, some sources mention the below proverb as an English proverb (which probably passed from Spanish or French in early 20th century). Not common though.

Probably the closest English saying to this is "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away," which is actually a misquote of Job 1:21:

And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
