You may use "a while ago/back" as a substitute. Although it means “a short or moderate time ago”, I guess it still works because recently itself is subjective.

Or it lent credence to your belief about his nature/behaviour.
To lend credence/plausibility to something means to make something more credible or probable.
I think you could also use reaffirm.
