A “critical success” in crafting

Reading through the page on the Guild Wars 2 wiki regarding crafting experience it makes mention to a 'Critical Success':

A critical success in crafting can either grant an experience bonus or refund some of the materials used but does not add to the value or stats of the item crafted.

What exactly is a 'Critical Success', and how do you know when you have succeeded in such a way? I am presuming this is similar to Critical Chance but for crafting, although the article doesn't specify that…

There is a small chance of getting critical success when crafting an item. When that happens you will get 15-50% bonus CXP or have some of the materials you used "refunded".

You can also increase the chance for critical success for 3/6/9% per tier by gaining artisan bonus via Power of the Mists mechanic in World vs World.

When you get the critical chance you will see x exp + y exp on your screen, the x = normal cxp you get from crafting and the y = bonus cxp which you get from critical chance and/or recipe discovery.

From what i noticed by watching videos of people crafting on youtube, when you get item refund via critical chance there is no message about it.

All characters start with 4% natural critical chance.

Your base precision is effectively ignored by the system. Additional critical chance is only provided by precision from your weapons/armor/jewelry/traits.

The amount of additional precision (not base) required to increase the chance of a critical hit by 1% is determined by the following formula, where Level is your character level:

0.0025 * (Level^2) + (0.05 * Level) + 1

So, at level 80, you gain 1% critical chance every 21 additional precision.

Are there any specific perks for Crafting

So two things:

First, every character can learn every crafting discipline. You won't even lose progress. The catch is that you can only have two active discipline at once (as in, can craft things with them), and it costs money to switch between them, based on how highly skilled a discipline you're switching into. (If you switch in to a discipline you have no experience in, it's free!)

Second, most untradable items are, in fact, account bound, so you can freely store them in your bank and remove them. I assume the actual Legendary Weapons will bind to a character, but the materials can be passed around willy nilly.

But Crafting in Guildwars 2 is very much its own part of the game. Crafted gear is equal to gear earned from any other number of options, and is not inherently better. The only real "perk", if you want to call it that, comes from convenience.
