I'm currently trying out DotA 2 (using the new Reborn Beta version), and since I'm new to these types of games, I'm working my way through the tutorials. One thing I've noted is that I can (and, to complete the tutorials, need to) buy stuff like a Tango and a Healing Salve right at the start of the tutorial. However, when I've used up the items, I can't buy any replacements, no matter how much gold I have available. The items are active (colored) in the shop, but nothing happens when I right-click on them. Am I doing something wrong, is there an in-game reason for this behavior that I just don't understand yet, or have I found a bug?

On the following image I additionally marked wards i use on regular basis in above average MMR (~3700).Works on AP mode on public matchmaking where counterwarding is less common.

For average skill games with low warding and no counterwards,you should focus mainly on red dots especially 2 hills near the runes with the priority of upper one in early game and lower one later when killing roshan becomes more likely.
- Having at least one ward near the rune will eliminate the chance of going the wrong side when timing runes
- the hills will give you more vision than placing wards on the ground
- easily prevent ganks since the river is most common way for ganking
- seeing enemy team attacking roshan is huge advantage
- also it reveals path near secret shop and neutral camp
Wards should be placed as early as it gets and replaced just a bit before they expire(you can see the timer),it is the best if you can go grab a rune and place new ward at the same time so you don't lose much "lane time",if it is on opposite lane you could port there and combine it with a gank or push attempt.
There are 2 types of wards Observer wards and Sentry wards the ones you need are observer ones the other is used to reveal invisible enemies and is placed directly on the line near combat(pink)

There is 1 more very important item that Lustin didn't mention, and that is the magic stick.
Early on in the game, this is a great way to get that small burst of health or mana that can often save you from death or provide the ability to get that crucial early kill.
And as you get more money, you can upgrade it into a magic wand for even greater effectiveness.
If you are constantly running out of life/mana, then there are a few things you can do to improve that situation.
- Buy a Stout Shield. This protects you quite a bit from ranged harass and can greatly boost your survivability.
- Watch your positioning. Don't attack an enemy hero when you are surrounded by creeps as they'll immediately target you. Don't hang around in the middle of the creep line either. Only go in for denies or last hits.
- Don't spam your skills too much unless you'll either a) get a hero kill b) prevent a hero death or c) keep yourself in the lane longer (do this sparingly). Mana management is very important early on, don't waste it on creeps.
- Get some branches. The boost in mana, health, and damage is quite significant early on in the game, and branches will be required to make that magic wand anyway.

I'm not too sure about the Reborn version, but in the tutorials in the previous version (before Reborn became the 'normal' version) you had to follow the specific prompting of the game. So it would not allow you to buy any items unless it wanted you to buy them. So even though that item was highlighted to indicate it could be bought, after you have bought it once you cannot buy another. Even with items such as a Tango, Salve, Mango, Clarity, or any other similar items.
