A person on a different website said it's a 1:6 ratio, which I'm sure is true, but does the '6' mean 6 'value', as in they can harvest 6 crops worth 1 food each or 12 crops worth .5 food each? Or is it just 6 plants, and however much food it provides doesn't matter?

According to the Wiki:
This means that they can work 12 crops at .5 each, or 6 at 1 unit each (or a mixture).
