In the third Necropolis mission, after I take the first Orc Stronghold, when I see the screen that says what artifacts I have won my graphics card appears to reset (both of my monitors reset) and after that the entire Heroes VI screen is invisible, so I cannot play. This happened exactly the same way again after I reloaded from a save. Can I avoid this and still defeat the Orcs?
This graphical glitch has happened before, but the other times it went away when I reloaded from the save.
There are preset heroes, but only if you play Heroes VI offline. When you aren't connected to the Conflux, you can choose from a list that contains a single Might and a single Magic hero from each faction.
When you are connected to the Conflux, you are restricted to your dynasty heroes and the factions they represent. However, as you finish the campaigns, you gain the heroes from those campaigns. I'm guessing (hoping?) that once you have finished all the campaigns you will have a might and a magic hero from every faction in your dynasty.
If I'm wrong, or if you want to play online skirmish or multi-player games right now (and be able to choose the faction you start with), you have to create your own hero for each faction.
It is an either/or choice, as reputation controls the class of your hero. Once you have enough Blood points or Tears points, your hero changes class and gains a new ability. You then get the chance to fill the points bar a second time (but only with the same type of points), which gives you an advanced ability for your class.
As in previous Heroes games, each faction has a might based hero and a magic based hero. In Heroes VI, each faction also has a might or magic based Blood hero and a might or magic based Tears hero, for a total of six classes per faction.

Try changing/lowering your graphic-settings. Maybe this avoids the problem. Also updating the driver of the graphic-card is never a bad idea.
