So, as we know, equipping yourself with a metal weapon, shield or bow can cause you to attract lightning during a storm. This can be either painful, or hilarious, depending on whether or not you have the lightning helm.
But, my question is does wearing more metal equipment increase the frequency, or decrease the timer for attracting lightning strikes, and can wearing metal armour affect this as well?
While it seems there are a multitude of secret mounts (non-horses of any kind) that you can mount and ride around, they are not mounts that you can register/keep, while you are able to tame/ride them.
This article talks about all the different mounts and explains based on player's accounts that unique mounts such as bears are only able to be mounted, and as soon as you get off, they will walk off too. I won't post more from there as some mounts could be potentially seen as spoilers.
Horses aren’t the only animals that can be tamed – we’ve seen a player riding an elk in one video. The taming process is the same as with horses, but there are some key differences. You can’t register wild mounts, which means they’ll be off as soon as you dismount them. They also have unique characteristics – they may be slower, but provide something else in return. We’ve seen one player mounting a bear. He said he couldn’t make the bear attack, but it did seem to scare a lot of the enemies away, so there’s that.
The reason you are exploding is because metal weapons and armor attract electricity in a lightning storm. Wearing an item that has the electrical discharge effect (such as the weapons in the figure below) will cause charge to build up until you explode. Un-equip those items and you won't build up charge.

When you are in the middle of a thunderstorm, anything metallic will turn you into a lightning rod as long as you have it equipped. Based on this answer, you can see which items will attract the lightning by looking at them in the menu.
Wearing metallic gear does not change the frequency, but it does increase the changes of being struck by lightning. Every 5 minutes in game (which is 5 seconds outside of game), the lightning will find a target to strike. The more metallic gear you are wearing, the greater the chances are being the target.
If you start to spark, you will have 10 seconds to switch out your gear or warp to a safe location.
