I have cooked Pinnacle Peaches. How soon must I eat them before they will no longer provide the bonus for being hot?

Hit Tab to open the survival panel. One of the options is "Forage Wood":
If you're outdoors, you get three options: Tinder, Softwood (i.e. Cedar firewood) or Hardwood (i.e. Fir firewood).
If you're indoors, you get two options: Tinder or Reclaimed wood.
You don't appear to need any tools to forage for wood, and I haven't noticed any furniture disappearing when I do it indoors.
OK, I found out - you CANNOT return to Milton! You can take whatever you can carry though, so take that distress pistol, those military rations and good quality tools.
Some people have complained of a bug where they lose all their gear when starting Episode 2. Here's exactly what I did to avoid it:
- Descend the mountain by the rocks next to the picnic area. The Episode doesn't end as soon as you've done this - so you still have a little time.

You can rest and eat. Then climb the other rope to continue.
Then follow the path round the mountain until you come to a cave. Enter the cave and follow the fairly linear path. When you come to the end a cutscene will play. DON'T PRESS ANYTHING! Let the cutscene play out, and also let the credits roll. They're not that long.
- Once credits have finished, you can continue. Click 'Wintermute' and then 'Resume'. An opening credits sequence will play. DO NOT SKIP! I couldn't remember if I'd seen it before, so I let it play out. Then sure enough, episode 2 started and I still had all my gear.

Food seems to remain hot for 100 in-game minutes (8 minutes and 30 seconds in real time).
I cooked a can of Pinnacle Peaches, then cooked other items while frequently checking the status of the cooked peaches in my inventory. The peaches kept the Hot status until 100 minutes had passed in the game, at which point they became Cold.
I was standing indoors next to a fire for the entire time. I do not know whether colder ambient temperature would have an effect on the food.
