I'm trying of DF 0.34.11 (linux) and was wondering if it's possible to increase the font size. I've looked through the forum without any luck (so far).

Yes. As far as I can see, and have tested, there should be no problem running both versions from the same (merged) folder. Here is the output of

all other files are identical
(Toady left some Thumbs.db from Windows in the linux version, bad Toady!)
As you can see, the only noticable differences are the libs for the Linux version and DLL files for the Windows version, and that each version has it's own executable, which is key for mutual co-existence (;))
You can even use a modded Windows version of DF and add the required Linux files to it to be able to play it on Linux.
So from what I gather is that you want to create a specific map or decrease the temperature on an already created map. I don't know the latter but I can help with the former:
- Open up DF
- On the main screen select Design New World With Parameters
- Select one of the presets and press the e key
- Scroll down till you see the following (should be the second page):
- Change the Maximum Temperature and Minimum Volcanism values
- good values for Temperature are ~45
- good values for Volcanism are >50
- Finally, to ensure a good Taiga you'll want to play with the Rainfall parameter.

You have two options: zoom in or use a larger font (or tileset).
To zoom, you can use the mousewheel or the [ and ] keys to zoom in and out, which is good for quickly getting a close up look at something or a quick overview of your domain. It does tend to make things blurry, though. The
ZOOM_SPEEDsetting affects how fast it zooms.To use a different font, you'll have to edit
data/init/init.txt(which is also where you findZOOM_SPEED). There are a lot of settings here, most of them well documented in the file itself, but the ones you're interested in areFONT,GRAPHICS_FONT, andGRAPHICS_FULLFONT, which control the font in non-tiled, tiled windowed, and tiled fullscreen modes.The default font is
curses_640x300, which is intended for use in an 80x24 tile game window at 640x300 resolution (hence the name), so the tiles are pretty small - 8x12.curses_square_16x16is a better choice; the tiles are square, and noticeably larger. If you want something different (or larger still), you can download a wide variety of fonts and tilesets from the wiki.
