I know that you can equip a new Profile Icon if you have just unlocked it by unboxing a Loot Box, but I cannot figure out how to change your profile icon. I've tried clicking on the profile icon but it brings me to the friends list menu, and nothing in the options menu shows how to change the profile icon image.
How do you change the Profile Icon?
That's an unused indicator of your MMR rank for an upcoming patch that will add a Competitive mode.
In Closed Beta, there was competitive matchmaking and as such that image you posted is the default image displayed on the Competitive Play screen.
Note that currently Overwatch does not have a competitive matchmaking system; this answer will be updated appropriately when it is added.

According to this (message 4),
when Zarya is on the enemy team. She is lightly glowing red when at 50 charge. Heavily glowing at 100, also meaning you typically want to get rid of her quickly before she melts your team.
