I dove to the bottom of the ocean and made a little pocket of air for myself. Then I started digging for stuff. Now that my bag is full, I want to get back to the surface so I can teleport to my ship, but I can't seem to swim fast enough to the surface, how can I get back to the surface easily? Is there anything that can help me with this in the future? (Other than a teleporter)

Upbeat Giraffe added keybindings menu in Options > Controls. Simply click on the button you want to rebind and click the key you want to use. You can bind 2 keys for each action. To remove the other key, bind the only one you want twice:
Binding move up to S twice, then W twice.
Alternatively you can click the trash bin icon to unbind the key, then bind it to the key you want. Remember to accept your changes before returning back to the options menu!
Those using an older version of the game can through the config files.
First, go to your game executable directory. You can get here by opening steam -> right-clicking Starbound in your library -> Properties -> Local Files Tab -> Browse Local Files
If you've been playing this game at all, there should be a file called starbound.config.

The rootKey that you are changing is, to the best of my knowledge, Starbound's root certificate, which identifies Starbound's certificate authority (CA). This is all fancy computer speak for knowing where your computer's photo ID comes from. Not being able to identify the CA results in a failed authentication, which makes the game crash.
There is no way to change the universe as a whole, but coordinates to planets are like Minecraft seeds. If you want to go to the same planet as someone, you can use their coordinates. Unfortunately due to the way planets generate, using coordinates only changes the planet's biome, and does not affect dungeon and/or ore spawns.

You'll have to build a tunnel of solid blocks.
To do this, stand just under the Ocean floor, and use your Matter Manipulator to place a 4xN column background tiles directly above you. Once you've placed the background tiles, place foreground tiles in the same place. Then, hollow out your column (being careful not to breach the ocean as you do so!)
Placing the foreground blocks will destroy the liquid, and placing the background blocks will prevent the ocean (which is infinite) from filling the space back in.
