I've started the "Star System" world template in Survival mode and landed my atmospheric lander in a mountain valley near a lake.
Now I am looking for resources to build a base, but so far I had no luck. I walked around my landing site and dug a 50m deep mining shaft, but no mineral location would appear on the hud.
Where and how should I look for minerals?
To charge your suit in Space Engineers, go to a medical room's terminal and hold T
Obviously, you have to be producing energy in order to charge it.
Your suit will also charge while you are sitting in the cockpit or any of its variants or passenger seats of a powered ship or station.
To disable the fog, you need to go to
Steam\SteamApps\common\SpaceEngineers\Content\Effects2
and find the file MyEffectBase.fxh.
Open this file with any text editor you have installed, e.g. Notepad or Notepad++ etc.
Find the following code:

Replace this code with:
float4 CalculateFogLinear(float3 sourceColor, float distance, float backgroundBlend)
{
return float4(FogColor, 0.0f);
}
Then open a command window in this directory by right clicking into explorer with shift held down and enter the following command:
del /s *.fxo
This will force the game to recompile all shaders. When you launch the game, your fog will be disabled:
If the game patches via Steam, you probably need to do it again, but this is only until the devs add an option to disable the fog in the settings.

You can use an Ore Detector to find ores in its detection range and fly/ride around the planet.
An other thing you can do is find "dark spots" like these:
