I was watching a friend play Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword the other day and saw that he can use his sword's dowsing ability to locate hearts… even though I am much further along n the game than he is, I do not have this ability. It doesn't really matter to me as I have two Heart Medals, so I am not needing to locate more hearts, I am just curious as to why he has that ability and I do not.
How do I gain the ability to dowse for hearts in Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword?
Those chests are scattered all over the world above the clouds, and can only be opened by activating the corresponding Goddess Cube in the the world below the clouds with your Skyward Strike. Once you do that the chest changes colour and can be opened. When a chest has been activated by a cube, it will show up on your map as a rectangular shape .

There are actually no songs for you to select on the harp. You just play the harp in certain places. The only difference between initiating one song or another is where you play the harp.
I understand the confusion as all other zelda games with instruments had specific patterns you had to play to activate the song. (Which is a better way of doing it IMHO)

Reach critcal health and call Fi by pressing D-down. After doing this once or a couple times Fi will tell you that you can dowse for Hearts. (You don't have to unlock additional Dowsing Targets slots before getting this one).
