Some of the items in Star Wars: The Old Republic refer to a "Social Rank", and they won't let me use them until I reach Social Rank 1 (or higher).
What are social points? How do I earn them? Aside from these Social Badges, are there any other benefits from doing so?
Try having them open Vent as Administrator. I have heard that it fixed this for a few of my guildmates.
Doing some further research into this. It seems like this has been a problem since beta. There seems to be an issue with how SWTOR is handling key presses. People are having problems with the keys they bind as well. An example, if you bind left control SWTOR is treating it as a modifier even if you don't have CTRL + (any key) bound to anything. This can prevent you from moving and activating abilities.
I haven't had a problem with Vent myself, but I use dual monitors and vent is open on the monitor that the game isn't on. No problems passing my PTT key then.
For the time being, set Vent to "Run as Administrator" by default.
This was added with Patch 4.0. Open Preferences and go to the Keybinding Import/Export tab on the bottom right. In the text box at the bottom left you can type a name and hit the Save (floppy disk icon) button, and then go to your other character and hit the Load (page icon) beside that name in the Key Presets list.

They're earned from conversations.
Every time you choose a conversation option during a cutscene while in a party, you get Social Points. In multi-person conversations, each character will roll to see who gets the definitive answer and speaks aloud.
If your character wins the roll and speaks, you get 2 Social Points per person in the conversation (so 8 if you're in a full party). Everyone who didn't win the roll gets 1 Social Point per participant (4 in a full party).
I'm not sure if the rewards are greater in a Flashpoint, though.
