- What happens internally to the minecraft application?
Currently, the way Minecraft Mods work is by modifying the minecraft.jar
that contains all the game code. This changes the code to allow extra features such as Single Player Commands or Zepplin Mod.
- What happens with the old saved games?
Nothing will happen to your old saved games.
- What is the compatibility of modded saved games versus a vanilla minecraft game?
A modded save game will work fine in vanilla minecraft. However, if you use a mod that adds new blocks (such as a nuke block) having those blocks in your inventory or placed in your world will cause them to not appear or worse.
- What else should I be aware of?
Do note that sometimes mods may not be compatible. This is usually because they modify the same source files, which means that when you install one, and then the other, the other will overwrite the first one, meaning that first mod will not be able to use that source file.
Also, sometimes when I install minecraft mods, minecraft does not start up. If that happens, I use the following command to start minecraft.
java -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -cp "%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\*" -Djava.library.path="%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives" net.minecraft.client.Minecraf
(it goes in the run box which you open by pressing WinKey + R)
Clientmod:
A clientmod is a simply modification which mostly just affect the look of your game or the gameplay (without any unfair advantages!). So this could be a texturemod or just some different soundfiles or something.
Servermod:
A servermod is needed to manipulate the game in a significant way. So there are servers which kick a player who didn't use a specific weapon or where you can't use your own classes your created (ref. CoD). Instead the servermodded lobby offers you some predesigned classes to achieve a specific kind of gameplay on this server. Servermods can also be little modifications like changed soundfiles (UT-Sounds in CS for example). Besides that there are servermods/tools which make it easier to administrate the gameserver, but I won't call this a mod, it's more an admintool.
Keep in mind that:
- some kind of mods are treated as cheating and may cause you to get banned
- some servermods require you to install the same mod on your client (some mods are downloading and installing them itself as you join a modded server)
- some mods may cause problems in different combinations. Read the manual of the mod for mor information
- if a mod needs the servermodification, then you need to play on a server with this mod installed to enjoy this mod

This can happen if your keybindings get messed up. Try resetting your keys from the options menu.
Failing that, delete the
Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\cfg
andSteam\steamapps\<your username>\garrysmod\garrysmod\cfg
folders. As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall Garry's Mod.
