How to tell if the DLC is active

I bought Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin for the PS3 recently. I received a physical copy of the Dark Souls 2 game (with the SotFS sleeve), and a code that would download all three pieces of DLC that are meant to come with the the Scholar version of the game. I activated the code on PSN (which downloaded 3 300kb files) and went about playing the game. All good as far as I could tell.

But, up until this moment, I've seen no sign that 'Scholar of the First Sin' is active on my game. I know the DLC areas have to be reached (at this point, I'm about twelve hours in, having just defeated the Lost Sinner) but I figured that the game should have mentioned it in some way at some point by now. I've seen no option to activate it beyond downloading the three pieces of DLC on PSN and the title screen shows the game as 'Dark Souls 2' with no subtitle of 'Scholar of the First Sin' (though I'm not sure if this would happen either way).

I've been avoiding guides for my first playthrough so I'm not sure when the Scholar himself should show up but should I be expecting any obvious signs at the start of the game that the DLC is active? Is this all a New Game plus thing, or should I just be waiting until much later in the game? I just don't want to have spent fifty hours playing the game only to find i missed one obscure option that invalidates everything.

It looks like what you bought wasn't Scholar of the First Sin, because the game should definitely have "Scholar of the First Sin" subtitles on it.

The disc is shown at the 7:43 minute mark.

I'd suggest going back to the store you bought it at and asking for an exchange, because it sounds like someone put the wrong disc in the SOTF case.

If I recall correctly the tutorial mainly consisted of teaching you the controls. If you have those figured out you haven't missed much. The full control list can be found at the wiki here.

Upgrading Equipment

You've learned how to level up so the next most important thing is learning how to upgrade your equipment. As you explore you will encounter several blacksmiths who will give you the option to upgrade your equipment when you talk to them. Upgrading equipment will cost souls as well as upgrade materials. Different weapons require different materials to upgrade, some materials can easily be bought from the smiths that upgrade your weapons and some must be found. Each weapon only has one upgrade path unlike in past Souls games.

Eventually, you will find a blacksmith who will be able to infuse weapons when you give him a key item. Infusion just means adding an effect to your weapon such as fire, lightning, magic, or poison. This infusion upgrade is independent of upgrading a weapons level. So infusing a +4 long sword with lightning will result in a +4 lightning long sword. Materials for infusion can be found or bought in limited quantities.

NPCs

On your travels you will encounter several NPCs. You should talk to them. However, they will not reveal everything they have to say at once. Talk to NPCs multiple times until they start to repeat themselves. Once the dialogue of NPCs is exhausted they will often be of some benefit to the player. Some give you items, others will sell you items, some even move into Majula for easier access.

Messages

You will often see orange mark on the ground. If you interact with them they will bring up a message left by another player. Some player messages are useful warning you of danger to come or giving hints about secrets in the area. However, some players leave messages to mislead you so always exercise caution. You too should leave messages for other players by pushing start and navigating to the message menu. Share your knowledge, or cause a bit of mischief. Or leave funny messages in front of skeletons.

Finally

This should be enough to get you started. Always remember that the wiki is your friend if you are confused about something. Dark Souls 2 really likes to withhold information (hidden effects on some equipment, random walls open up to secret rooms, etc.) so there's no shame in using outside resources.

It seems like you're losing packets here, but I would suggest that you try port forwarding anyway. You can find referenced guides here and here.

If you don't know how to do that, what you want to do is go to Portforward.com then find your router. There will be an ad, but you can close it in the top right corner. You can probably just use the default config using the link found in the top paragraph of the page, generically seen below

Then you want to follow the instructions for that specific router to allow the following ports:

UDP 27000 to 27030
TCP 27014 to 27050
UDP 3478 to 3479
UDP 4379 to 4380
TCP 3478 to 3480
TCP 5223
TCP 8080
TCP 50000 to 50100
UDP 50000 to 50100
UDP 3458

Once all of these ports have been forwarded, you should notice an improvement in connection quality with other Dark Souls 2 players. If not, you could also try the more complete list of ports in the original posts of either link at the top of my answer.
