I'm stuck in the second tutorial mission of A Game of Dwarves. I need to upgrade my spawning pool in order to recruit more dwarves, but I have no idea where to click in order to accomplish that.

It appears to have an affect anywhere on the map. Every happiness item you build increases their happiness rate. It also seems that once the happiness rate is on the positive side, their happiness will simply continue to climb until it reaches 100%.
I've found the wall and floor coverings for your main base are enough to keep them at 100% happiness.
No, there is no way to make it work with DirectX9, as outlined by the devs:

The engine used by the developers does not support DirectX9 at all.
For your screen tearing, there is an option in the game called "VSync". If you enable that and restart the game, the tearing will be gone. However, make sure that VSync is not forced off in your graphics card panel (Catalyst or NVIDIA Control Panel).

You need to click on the bottom right, where you see this round sphere with the image of a village, which represents Hemfort, the Town where all your dwarflings are coming from.
That opens a menu where you can upgrade your spawning pool.
