I failed a phase challenge. Can I try it again

I got into the king goo challenge, got surrounded, forgot to check my health bar and quite obviously died. The phase portal's seemingly gone.

Is this it? Does my character have no more tries to get the phat loot?

If you save and exit while in a phase beast challenge, then when you start up again, you'll be at the beginning of the challenge, but still have all of the items you got from it before. Thus, you can farm a challenge repeatedly this way. Make sure before you go in that you have plenty of inventory room, both yours and your pet's.

Note that this only works in single player, as you'll always restart in town while in multiplayer. And once you leave the phase zone, the only way to try again is to reroll the map and find a phase beast again (which might not give you the same challenge).

Start a LAN game, check the 'Reroll world' box. All the enemies will be respawmed (possibly allowing you to spawn side quests that didn't appear in the original world - I haven't cared to check for that yet). You'll lose your character's original world. but you'll have tons more mobs to kill. It's kinda boring, tbqh - that level jump isn't as hard as you might think, and the only real annoyance I've had is that items don't drop ID'd anymore because they're higher level than I am. Playing on Normal - my Veteran character got devoured and spat back out trying to do the same thing.

How to two identical gems have different effects

Gems in Torchlight II are split into two categories, there are normal gems (for example Venom Ember, Spark Ember, Ice Ember, etc) and rare gems (for example Blood Ember).

The difference is that normal gems always have the same attributes for each level of gem, while rare gems have randomly assigned attributes from a selection.

Here is a list of all gems in Torchlight II and their possible attributes, as you can see Blood Ember Speck is capable of having either of the following attributes:

Armor/Trinket: 7.2 Health Recovery per second
Weapon:        12 Health Stolen on Hit

Armor/Trinket: +48 Health
Weapon:        Conveys 35 Physical Damage over 5 seconds
