I am currently having a play on the new Resident Evil 6 demo on PS3.
When you start a new campaign, you get to select from a choice of two characters to play as (and depending on which campaign you choose, the character choices vary). Is it possible to switch to the other character during gameplay?
While I do not own the game, someone took the time to upload a set of videos where they play through chapter 1 on professional (so they have a bunch of things unlocked, making everything much easier).
If you look at these three videos, you can see them attain an S rank on that chapter, with relevant tips.

While the above aren't necessarily the minimum criteria for an S rank, you will definitely attain one if you are at least that good (on that specific chapter, it obviously makes sense that the criteria are different for different chapters).
In my experience, quitting a game session at any point before you get the "saving" message in the upper left corner along with the typewriter icon animation means you will not retain any changes to your inventory, or skill points collected. This is not the same as when the "checkpoint" message is displayed, checkpoints DO NOT count as saves.

The player characters from each scenario will have their own partners which are controlled by either the computer AI or another human player via local or online multiplayer. When playing in single player, the player can allow another player to join in online at any time and inventories are now kept seperate from each other.

So basically no you can't switch but if you're hardcore you could buy another PS3, hook it up the local network and with the 2nd character with your feet :P
