Destiny 2 – Is Xur’s Exotic Engram Pre-Selected?

I visited Xur over the weekend and was going to buy the his exotic engram only to find a message telling me I did not have enough space.

I had a free inventory space in all slots except my helmet.

Does this mean the exotic engram would be a helmet? Or do I require an empty inventory space in every slot to receive the engram?

You need to have a free engram space to buy or pick up any engram, even if it will decode immediately. That is the reason that you don't have enough space, it is not effected by your armor or weapon spaces until it has decoded, then it will go to postmaster if necessary.

This is pretty easy to test at the minute because umbral engrams are dropping so much. This is also the reason that you may not have ran into this issue before.

Engram capacity is 10, you can check you currently held engrams in the inventory screen. That is the right tab from your charcter screen, the one with your consumables etc.

It is a bit confusing because other drops that are just straight up equipment (not engrams) look very similar to engrams so you might not have noticed the difference before.

Your Total Base Power (TBP) is based upon all of your highest Base Power Level equipment, this number will determine the Power Level of items dropped. Legendary (+5) Mods do not count toward your TBP. This will look for all of your highest Base Power Level gear throughout your vault, inventory, and equipped items, feel free to use any equipment you'd like! Furthermore, each slot may be filled with an exotic to count toward your TBP.

Your TBP will be the average sum of all the highest Base Power Level gear. (This number can also be found by logging into Destiny Item Manager.)

Subtract 5 from your TBP to get your Drop Power Level. (Ex: 280 Total Base Power = 275 Drop Power Level)

If your Drop Power Level is 275 and you complete a Powerful Gear Milestone you will receive a drop with a Base Power of 288.
These numbers may differ when you reach 285-300 TBP.

Is the engram reward power-level determined upon receiving, or decrypting

It depends on the type of engram.

If you are killing enemies in the wild and a legendary engram drops, the power level of that engram is determined when it dropped. Once you pick up the engram, you can see what power level it will be by hovering over it in your inventory screen.

On the other hand, powerful engrams determine their power level when you pick them up. You can get powerful engrams from completing weekly milestones, clan rewards (picked up from Hawthorn in the tower), and loot from raids.
