In the "Deep Dark", I found what looked like a naturally generated hole straight down through the bedrock into the void, is that normal?

You can view your distance from the bedrock layer by pressing F3, which will show your current coordinates on screen. This isn't quite the same as knowing how far you are from the surface, but it's a good way to get a quick estimate of how deep you are.
Before the F3 feature was added, the best way to estimate your vertical position in the world was to pay attention to what kind of ore you find as you dig. (This is still very useful knowledge to have, for obvious reasons.)
If you prefer not use F3 to get your exact coordinates and want a purely in-world solution, you should look to one of the other methods of tracking distance which JavadocMD mentioned.

I posted on the Technic board, and it turns out that it is in-fact part of Better Dungeons as Dimtuhop suggested. These are apparently rare, but intended, cave systems.
So, for those interested, it's worth searching for! Just dig down to bedrock level and tunnel around. It's actually quite fun to explore and (although it appears to have the same amount of ore) there's lots of ore!

Are you sure it was a hole, and not just un-generated blocks? Sometimes a block will be generated as a barrier block, and will need a few minutes to load. Try tossing down an item, like dirt, and if it falls down, its just a glitch, and this shouldn't happen in any other worlds. If the dirt stays there, try walking on it, as this means it is just not loaded yet. If this occurs in any other worlds, and it is a hole, contact Mojang with a bug-report.
