Minecraft – Do alternative dimensions depends on the world seed

We have a new world on our 1.0 minecraft server in which we just created a nether portal.

We started exploring the nether to gather some materials, but didn't manage to find a nether fortress or structures to get some nether brick.

I was thinking of deleting the nether folder of the world and let the server regenerate it from scratch, hoping for more luck during the generation process.

However, before doing such, that question came to my mind : 'Is the nether dimension tied to the world seed ?'.

If so, deleting the world may be useless, and we need to explore further to find a nether fortress.

Does anyone have information on how the alternative dimensions are generated relative to the world seed ?

Yes, the Nether is generated the same way as other terrain (in fact it's just a special biome). It uses your world seed to generate it, so re-generating will not affect the layout of it (although there may be slight changes, such as the position of mushrooms, but I'm guessing that this doesn't bother you too much).

Well, as it turns out, /sp is just an alias for /superpickaxe. You could easily change this to anything else. Just open the WorldEdit.jar with any ZIP unarchiver and edit the plugin.yml file that's inside. It's a large file, so just do a Ctrl-F and search for 'superpickaxe' to find what you're looking for. It should look like this:

    usage: /<command> 
    aliases: ['pickaxe', 'sp']

See the line that says aliases: ['pickaxe', 'sp']? Just remove the 'sp' and replace it with whatever you want. That should fix the issues. Then just rearchive the JAR and run the server.

Minecraft – Viewing the world seed in the multiplayer mode

I was able to find out the seed for my multiplayer world by downloading this program and opening the level.dat, with the program, in the world folder for the world that you are running. When you do that, it will display the seed in the top-left corner of the program. To make sure that it is the correct seed, simply make a new singleplayer world with that seed and check the coordinates by pressing F3. You can then go to your multiplayer world, to see if the world looks the same by going to the coordinates that you checked in your singleplayer world.
