With the 1.5 update, I've been looking at some of the new minecart features. I'm looking to replace my "traditional" boosters with powered rail, which should be easy enough, but I've also incorporated auto return for empty carts. If detector rail activates when empty carts roll over it, then it obviously won't work, and I'll have to continue using traditional boosters, at least for the stations. The mincraft wiki isn't clear whether detector rail will activate or not.

Redstone wire is a little tricky with how it can and can't turn. Replacing the sandstone under your TNT with more TNT and running the wire straight up to that should detonate it.
Alternately, elevate your wire to the level of your TNT before it reaches it, and have the wire run straight into your lowest TNT block.
To test this, I built a tower over some spawners and stayed directly over them about 15-20 blocks higher than they are.
As you can see, the flames have disappeared (and the spawners quit spinning, but you can't tell that from a picture), indicating that they are no longer spawning, despite me being directly over them.
So yes, it does take into account vertical distance.

All carts trigger the Detector Rails for now.
