Minecraft – How to create a floating layer of signs that lets eggs through in a chicken coop

I had previously been using signs as a layer to hold water in a chicken coop (the chickens float in the water and drop eggs through), and underneath the layer of signs I had another layer of water which sweeps all the eggs out to one end. However when I stacked my signs to build a coop today, they broke when I removed the layer underneath.

I think I can still walk under the chickens to collect the eggs by stacking 2 signs on top of each other in each square of the coop, but water can no longer flow underneath to sweep them out of the coop.

How can I make the signs float? Or is there something else I can use instead as a layer that holds water but lets eggs through?

You can place the signs against each other. Put the first one on a wall, then put the next one on the first one, and continue the process for all of them. I hope that helps.

Edit: As of 1.8, you need to shift click on signs to place them against each other.

Floating islands are generally natural formations that are made on the map, however you are free to create them yourself.

Basically, any block outside of Sand and Gravel do not actually obey gravity, and simply stay in place when the block below them is destroyed (or when placed adjacent to another block with nothing underneath it). Using this simple concept, you can create your own floating platforms by first building using a grounded scaffold, and then destroying the scaffold.

If you "sneak" (check your configuration for the key) then you will not fall off the edge of any block, so you can place several adjacent blocks while on top of your platform by looking over the edge of the platform and placing a block. This will allow you to create vast floating platforms.

As for lava you need a Bucket crafted and a lava source block, that is, a block of lava that isn't "flowing". You can than harvest the lava source block while holding the bucket and right clicking on the lava source block. You can then place this like any other block (and lava will start to flow from the source block).

put a slab on the square you are standing on and leave a 1 square gap in the direction the water is flowing from (use glass if you want to be able to see what's coming). The slab will prevent anything from being pushed through but you will automatically pick up the items as they approach.

The chickens won't be able to move into where you are due to the half slab keeping them in the water tile beneath the glass.
