Minecraft – How to level water

It may be my inner OCD, but situations like this annoy me to no end. Sometimes, a patch of water is "ruined" for no apparent rational reason and all attempts to restore it to normality are met with failure.

My latest attempt was building dirt where the currents were, then removing it. The result is pictured. :/

Is there something I can do about it, or is it just a glitch?

Place dirt right underneath the crazy currents and it should sort itself out automatically.

If it doesn't, add a source block to the place all the water flows to.

What you need to do is have point A higher than point D, and then have the water go down a level before changing level. So from the side it will look like this:

8 7 6 5 4 S
B B B B B 8 7 6

8 = Water source
B = Block
S = Sign

This way the water cannot flow backwards and you don't have to move the slimed upwards.

Place the water sources above some signs. Although they don't have a collision box (can't block mobs), signs block water from flowing in that direction.

This is working because in Minecraft pretty much anything is a block. This includes water and signs (although you can look through them). Water won't flow through any block as that would require to interfere with it. Therefore this also works with ladders, fences, steps, etc.

The signs also keep the mobs from drowning.
